About this workshop:

This zoom session will support leaders and kaiako to deepen their understanding of Te Whāriki to design and implement a programme of learning and development that reflects local priorities and supports each child’s personalised learning pathway, to weave a whāriki that enables and supports diversity in Aotearoa.

In this session we will take a walk through Te Whāriki, so have one alongside you.  This walk through will strengthen your understanding of what is expected in relation to the expectation that each ECE servive will use Te Whāriki as a basis for weaving with children, parents and whānau its own local curriculum of valued learning, taking into consideration also the aspirations and learning priorities of your community.

  • Discover how to determine ‘what learning matters here’
  • Engage with whānau through acknowledging identity, language and culture
  • Incorporate multiple perspectives
  • Create a rich curriculum for all children
  • How might your local curriculum be documented.

$52 - delivered online (via Zoom) - Register now

Abut this workshop:
More than ever, post-COVID, we are called to shine a light on how we are taking care of ourselves holistically - not just physically, but emotionally, mentally, and socially as well.
As teachers, how can we ‘adjust our own oxygen masks’ first before attending to our tamariki? What practices do we have in place to take care of our bodies, minds, and hearts, which informs the way we are connecting to everyone and everything around us? How can we be a walking-talking example of true health and wellbeing for the children we teach and heir whānau.
Te Whare Tapa Whā is a Māori four-pillared approach to wellbeing. Forget the one dimensional model of just working the body. Learn how to create a tailor-made wellbeing plan for you and your students.
Learning outcomes:
Learn what the four-pillars of Hauora are.
  • Shine a light on some growth opportunities for your own health.
  • Create your own Hauora plan, with special attention paid to mental and emotional wellbeing.
  • Learn how to facilitate this same plan for tamariki using Jase Te Patu's programme M3 Mindfulness.
About our facilitator, Jase Te Patu:
Jase Te Patu (Ngāti Apa, Ngāti Ruanui and Ngāti Tūwharetoa) is a TEDx Speaker, an Edmund Hillary Fellow, and an award-winning facilitator of yoga and mindfulness. Literacy: Revving up your Reading Programme - Kate Birch

$52 each - delivered online (via Zoom) - Register for Workshop 1 - Register for Workshop 2 - Register for Workshop 3

About the workshops:

Every day, teachers take small groups of students for an instructional reading lesson, while the rest of the class work independently. The most common approach used is the guided reading approach, which is the bread and butter of an effective instructional reading lesson. But not every lesson has to use this approach: highly effective teachers will change and adapt approaches to motivate and sustain their students’ enjoyment of learning to read. Join our workshops to learn more about approaches and strategies that you can use to rev up your reading programmes.

In each of these workshops, we will explore what this approach is about and make sure we understand when and why we use it. Then we will see what it looks like in practice, having a go with some texts and teacher prompts and tips, so that you are ready to give them a try back in your classroom.

About our facilitator – Kate Birch

Kate is a highly skilled and experienced educator with extensive experience in literacy, assessment and professional development programmes for teachers and leaders. She has extensive classroom experience in both the primary and secondary sectors.

On completion of her Master’s degree in 2001 she lectured for Massey University in the Teaching of Reading, and has been a literacy consultant since 2004.  She is also well known throughout NZ schools for her ‘Chunk, Check, Cheer’ strategy and approach to reading and spelling.

She was a facilitator in the New Zealand Literacy Professional Development Project (LPDP) working in schools across Auckland. She was the moderator for Literacy Online tki in 2012-13 and has facilitated e-asTTle workshops around NZ supporting teachers to use e-asTTle as a formative assessment tool for reading and writing.

Kate is also a Visible Learning Plus consultant, both in New Zealand and internationally, and has been part of the programme development team which has supported schools to embed the principles of the Visible Learning research. Her book, Evidence into Action, co-written with John Hattie, showcases 15 schools around the world who have implemented the VL programmes.  Kate has relocated to the South Island and is an independent contractor to schools throughout New Zealand to support and promote improved literacy for learning.

Meeting of Minds

“Phillippa facilitated a meeting of minds. I enjoyed the informal setting as it allowed for small group and whole group discussions without fear of judgement. These discussions helped critique strategies and activities and improvements and variations were suggested for practical purposes. It was awesome!”

Passionate & inspiring

“As always, Julie's passion for mathematics shone through and she motivated and inspired me to want to take it back and try it in the classroom.”

Motivational

“I found the simplicity of the activities and the integration of science, technology and maths particularly useful. Ben prompted and encouraged responses of rich vocabulary. His enthusiasm was very motivating considering science is not my strength! I also appreciated his commitment to tikanga Māori.”

Extremely Practical

“The Maths workshop run by Julie Roberts was wonderful. In two hours we learnt (and played!) many great games and activities for use in the classroom. All of the activities can be differentiated for different age groups and abilities and require minimal materials which made them extremely practical. I will definitely be attending more workshops like this one.”

Ideas for the Classroom

“Such a fun and enjoyable morning! It gave me lots of ideas to use in the classroom. The course leader was really experienced and had a realistic understanding of the challenges of a day in the classroom.”

Purposeful & Fun

“EP provides short, practical courses to assist relievers in their classroom practice, which require limited resources but are purposeful, fun and of educational benefit. Great value for money.”
